New Zealand Vs India | 1st ODI Match Report | Sundar’s great finishing knock

Latham’s energy and Williamson’s composure help New Zealand win with plenty of time remaining.

In the first ODI against India on Friday in Auckland, Kane Williamson displayed excellent composure to finish on 94 not out of 98 balls, while Tom Latham continued his outstanding record against India by smashing an unbeaten 145 off 104 balls. Together, they put on an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 221 runs off 165 balls to enable New Zealand to chase down India’s 306 for 7 with seven wickets and 17 balls remaining, giving them a 1-0 series lead.

The No. 1 ODI team in the world, New Zealand, has gone 13 ODIs without losing at home.

Earlier, India reached a respectable total with two half-centuries from Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, and Shubman Gill as well as a brief appearance from Washington Sundar. Washington said at the half that he believed the score to be par, but in the end, it wasn’t.

Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik were making their format debuts, hence India was fielding a young bowling attack. The lack of a sixth bowling option severely restricted them, especially as the chase approached.

With seven wickets in hand, New Zealand needed 91 runs in the final 11 overs. With a few fast wickets, India may have been in the game, but that is when Latham decisively turned the game in favour of New Zealand.

Shardul Thakur had statistics of 1 for 29 from seven overs up until that moment. He scored 25 in the 40th over, including four fours and a six from Latham. After practically every boundary, India altered the field, but Latham was irrepressible. Thakur also assisted him by frequently bowling short and occasionally down the leg side.

Latham was on 77 at the beginning of that over. He had scored his sixth ODI hundred off just 76 balls by the time it was over.

The equation was decreased by Latham’s assault from 60 balls to 66 required. By the time New Zealand had reached the finish line, he had begun to experiment with the bowling, smashing the fast bowlers through the covers, dragging them to whatever area took his fancy and even using the back of the bat to reverse-sweep Yuzvendra Chahal behind the wicketkeeper.

Williamson’s signature dab to deep third and a four was also how the winning runs were scored.

Even though India lost this match, Washington Sundar managed to win the hearts of the fans with his cameo due to his exuberant and quirky shots.

Latham was absolutely unstoppable today and showed the class his batting prowess against the Indian bowling lineup. Kane is as cool as ever and one of the greatest captains of his era showing why New Zealand and he deserve the number 1 spot in the ODI rankings.
