Indian T20 League 2021: Chennai vs Mumbai Match Report

Great start of the  Phase 2 by the Chennai team. They dominated the opponents and Ruturaj Gaikwad starred with his bat as Chennai defeated Mumbai on Indian T20 League’s return in Dubai on 19 September 2021.

Team Chennai started the second phase of the very well as they beat team Mumbai by 20 runs in the first T20 match.  The match was really thrilling as there were only three singles and 2 wickets in the last over of Dwayne Bravo.  Apart from the bad start by the team, Chennai’s Ruturaj Gaikwad played a thrilling inning to give his team a great grip over the match.  While chasing the target of 157 runs team Mumbai Indian was losing the Wickets at regular intervals and they could not chase the target given by Chennai.  Very great bowling and batting performance by Chennai led by MS Dhoni made the day for the entire franchise. 

The showdown between Mumbai and Chennai who shared eight titles has marked the beginning of the Indian T20 League Phase 2 on 19th September.  Earlier the was postponed in May due to a bio bubble breach during the covid-19 second wave spread in India.

Mumbai needed 157 runs to win they were off to a quick start but before Deepak Chahar got the wicket of Quinton de Kock in the third over.  A brilliant DRS call from the Chennai captain MS Dhoni and the team got the first success.  This right-arm fast bowler has already built a great reputation of taking wickets during the powerplay and has added more wickets  into his account as he got opener Anmolpreet Singh’s wicket in the 5th over. 

 After this, Shardul Thakur also gave the third success to Chennai as he dismissed Suryakumar Yadav in the 6th over.  After this dismissal, Saurabh Tiwary and Ishan Kishan took team Mumbai to the score of 50.  However, Ishan Kishan was dismissed by Dwayne Bravo.  

 The captain of Mumbai’s Kieron Pollard and Saurabh Tiwary added further 29 runs, but later Josh Hazlewood dismissed Karen Pollard as LBW.  Letter Bravo got Krunal Pandya’s wicket and post Mumbai to the backfoot.  After the dismissal of Krunal Pandya, the team was at 94/6.  Tiwary somehow managed to score some runs for the team with his brilliant half-century e along with Adam Milne who scored 40 runs but they were too late as Chennai sealed a great 20 runs win. 


Chennai’s Innings 

After winning the toss, the captain of Chennai decided to bat first.  Mumbai had played the first T20 match against Chennai without there are regular captain and Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya. 

 Mumbai used the Kiwi fast bowlers Trent Boult and Adam Milne against Chennai’s top-order batsman.  Trent Boult dismissed FAF du Plessis in his first over while Milne dismissed Moeen Ali in the very next over.  Adam Milne then added one more wicket to his account in the final over of the power play.  Trent Boult took a great catch in the Deep of captain MS Dhoni.  The innings of team Chennai was completely hampered as Ambati Rayudu was retired due to his elbow injury in Milne’s delivery.  

However, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja kept rolling the rhythm of the batting side and they were able to increase the score against Mumbai’s  bowlers. 

Chennai’s scored 70 runs in 13 overs with the help of a great partnership between Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja.  After 3 overs Ruturaj Gaikwad finished his half-century and overall 6th in the Indian T20 League.  

Later, after finishing the hundred runs mark, Ruturaj Gaikwad joined Dwayne Bravo, and the duo played in a full Gear style for Chennai.  Bravo got out in the last over after his 23 runs innings, Gaikwad state until the end and took the team 156/6, a decent score.
